The CHASS Advising Model
CHASS Advisors Connect with You
As you progress through your academic career, you’ll need support. In CHASS, that support goes beyond providing guidance on required courses and sequences — you’ll receive consistent interactions that help you grow.
CHASS faculty advisors build relationships with you by connecting early and often, helping to enhance your educational experience and achieve your dreams.
Our services are designed around you
You’ll learn what advising is, why it matters and how it works. CHASS partners with student services offices throughout campuses to ensure you know the importance of advising in your academic journey.
Our services are designed around you and your needs, whether it’s phone or email check-ins, group sessions or in-person or virtual meetings. Each fall and winter semester, you’ll be able to participate in CHASS’ One Stop Advising Day, where groups of students meet with advisors in one place for all of their advising needs.
CHASS advisors are proactive.
CHASS advisors also practice proactive advising. If you are nearing graduation or if your GPA is below the required threshold, our advisors will set up meetings to provide support.
All CHASS students must see their advisor before preparing for the next semester of registration.
CHASS advisors use the Appreciative Advising model.

What is Appreciative Advising?
“Appreciative Advising is the intentional collaborative practice of asking positive, open-ended questions that help student optimize their educational experiences and achieve their dreams, goals and potentials.”
The Six Phases of Appreciative Advising
Disarm: Recognizing the importance of first impressions, create a safe, welcoming environment for students.
Discover: Utilize positive open-ended questions to draw out what students enjoy doing, their strengths and their passions. Appreciative advisors listen to each answer carefully before asking the next positive question.
Dream: Help students formulate a vision of what they might become, and then assist them in developing their life and career goals.
Design: Help students devise concrete, incremental and achievable goals.
Deliver: The students follows through on their plans. The advisor is there for them when they stumble, believing in them every step of the way and helping them continue to update and refine their dreams as they go.
Don’t Settle: The advisor challenges the student to proactively raise the student’s internal bar of self-expectations.
The Appreciative Advising model inspire students to have an empowering view of themselves.
