Award-winning Publications
Naomi Long Madgett Poetry Award Series
UDM Press and Broadside Lotus Press co-published the first of ten books in the Naomi Long Madgett Poetry Award series.
The 2025 award winner was Joanne Godley for How the Black Panthers Fell from the Sky.
The Naomi Long Madgett Poetry Award
Dr. Naomi Long Madgett, nationally celebrated poet and publisher of Lotus Press, established the Naomi Long Madgett Poetry Award in 1993, with the mission of recognizing and publishing outstanding African American poets. Since the merger of Lotus Press and Broadside Press in 2015, Broadside Lotus Press has continued the annual project. African American poets may submit original, unpublished manuscripts of at least 50 pages in length in March of each year. All submissions are reviewed by the Award Series Editor at Broadside Lotus Press, with a nationally recognized, distinguished poet naming the final winner. The winning poet receives a monetary award, and Broadside Lotus Press and University of Detroit Mercy Press publish the manuscript in the following year.
