Bachelor of Arts with a major in Economics

Major: Economics

The Bachelor of Arts with a major in economics entails the academic study of economic analysis with a strong foundation in the theory and application of economic principles. Within the context of a liberal arts education, the program provides you with a deeper knowledge of history, institutions and world economy, and prepares you to think analytically and critically about moral and ethical issues in the realm of economics. The degree allows a wide range of theoretical and applied aspects, which prepares you for a career in research or further study toward a graduate or professional degree.

The credit hours earned for the completion of the major in economics may not be counted toward the completion of the major in financial economics, or for the minors in economics or financial economics.

To obtain this undergraduate degree, the student must fulfill the requirements of the University core curriculum, the requirements for the 33-credit-hour program major and have completed a minimum of 120 credit hours. Applicants must meet University of Detroit Mercy entrance requirements. Transfer students must have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.0 to be considered for possible admission.

Accelerated 6-Year Law Scholars Program (3+3)
Are you ready to accelerate your law career? Detroit Mercy’s innovative Accelerated 6-Year Law Scholars Program enables you to earn both a bachelor's degree and a Juris Doctor degree in only six years rather than the traditional seven. Economics is an approved major for this program. Students must meet program entrance criteria.

A University of Detroit Mercy economics minor is a good option for many majors, including political science, communication studies, education and business. This minor will deepen your foundational understanding of economics as well as teach you to gather and analyze relevant data and evaluate economic policy proposals.

Financial Economics Minor

University of Detroit Mercy's financial economics minor is also a good option for many majors, including political science, communication studies, education and business. This minor will deepen your foundational understanding of economics as well as teach you to gather and analyze relevant data and evaluate economic policy proposals. Required courses focus on a breadth of monetary issues and fiscal policy.

Build skills in data analysis, modeling and visualization, drawing on expertise in computer science, cybersecurity, business, economics, mathematics, architecture and health professions.

A faculty-guided capstone project lets you apply what you learn to a meaningful data challenge.

The flexible 30-credit program prepares you to transform complex data into insights that improve businesses, organizations and systems.

Applied Data Analytics

Master of Arts in Economics

Analyze U.S. and global financial systems, conduct applied research and make informed decisions in a changing economy. The program combines economic theory with an understanding of the history, institutions and forces shaping today’s marketplace.

Graduates are prepared for career advancement in business, finance, government, education and nonprofit organizations.

Graduate Certificate in Applied Data Analytics

This 15-credit-hour (5 course) graduate certificate is designed to provide hands-on training in the area of applied data analytics.

Coursework focuses on development of knowledge and skills in critical reasoning, measurement development and evaluation, data management, data analytic software utilization, multivariate data analysis and modeling, and data mining techniques.

* Note: Students who elect their course of study at the McNichols campus are not eligible to take classes online at the discounted rate. Online only students are not eligible to take classes at the McNichols Campus.

Scholarship

The University offers scholarships to students applying to graduate programs in Economics, Financial Economics and Applied Data Analytics. The amount is contingent on the eligibility of each applicant.

Graduate assistantships

The Department of Economics is pleased to announce the availability of Graduate Assistant (GA) positions, available in fall and winter semesters. Assistantships offer graduate students the opportunity to apply skills and knowledge while receiving financial support. GAs serve as a support person to a faculty's teaching assignments and/or help faculty on their research. However, the GAs will NOT perform the teaching duties for the faculty.

The application for the GA positions for the fall semester of 2026 is now open. The application deadline is June 30 at 11:59 p.m. (EDT).

Student Achievements

Jacob Kuziola

Achievement – The Department of Economics Graduate Assistantship awardee, winter 2026

Jacob Kuziola is a graduate student in Detroit Mercy’s accelerated 5-year bachelor’s-to-master’s program, pursuing a Master of Arts in Economics with an expected graduation in May 2026. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Economics and History, with a minor in Business Administration, in June 2025.

Kuziola is passionate about exploring the connections between economic principles and historical events, analyzing how economic history has impacted past and current economic decisions.

In addition to his academic pursuits, Kuziola is an active member of University Ministry, serving as a Sacristan. He has lived briefly in Europe and is fluent in Polish.

Vedant Fuldeore

Achievement – The Department of Economics Graduate Assistantship awardee, winter 2026

Vedant Fuldeore is a graduate student in Detroit Mercy’s Master of Science in Applied Data Analytics program with an expected graduation in December 2026. He was recently awarded a Graduate Assistantship in the Department of Economics for winter 2026 in recognition of his strong academic performance and quantitative skills.

Originally from India and now based in Detroit, Fuldeore is interested in applying data analytics to economics, business and decision-making. He looks forward to supporting faculty and students in the department and contributing to the Detroit Mercy academic community.

Prasad Jadhav

Achievement – The Department of Economics Graduate Assistantship awardee, winter 2026

Prasad Jadhav is a graduate student pursuing a Master of Science in Applied Data Analytics at Detroit Mercy. His academic interests center on the intersection of data science, quantitative analysis and economic decision-making, with a focus on applying analytical models to understand real-world organizational problems and inform policy and business decisions.

Jadhav’s background in analytics and strategic problem-solving has shaped his interest in the evolving role of data in economic and technological systems. Originally from India, he aims to pursue a career in analytics that integrates data, economics and technology.
