Graduate Assistantships
The Department of Economics is pleased to announce the availability of the Graduate Assistant (GA) positions. Assistantships offer students the opportunity to apply skills and knowledge while receiving financial support. GAs serve as a support-person to a faculty’s teaching assignments and/or help faculty on their research. However, the GAs will NOT perform the teaching duties for the faculty.
The applications process for the GA positions for the winter semester of 2025 is now open.
Graduate Assistantships Application Guidelines
Qualifications
Students must meet the following criteria to be considered for the assistantship positions. Due to the limited availability of the funds, the granting of assistantships is a competitive process. Meeting those criteria does NOT guarantee awards.
- Must enrolled in the graduate programs in the Department of Economics.
- A minimum of 3.5 GPA in the graduate program.
- Full-time student status in the awarding semester.
Application Documents
Graduate assistantship awards are typically made on a semester basis and contingent upon the availability of the funds. A student can only obtain 1 assistantship position per semester. However, a maximum of a total of 2 awards per student is enforced to ensure equal opportunity. Interested students must submit the following documents for consideration.
- A statement of interest.
- Resume or CV.
Please submit the above documents in ONE Word or PDF via e-mail to Dr. Yu Peng Lin, Chair of Department of Economics, at linyp1@udmercy.edu by November 29th, 2024 at 11:59pm (EDT). Please note that late or incomplete submissions will not be considered.
Assistantship Requirements
- Recipients of assistantships are expected to work approximately 8~10 hours per week. In return for this commitment, students are paid via tuition remission. Recipients are still responsible for the rest of tuitions and fees.
- The tuition remission shall not exceed the recipient’s total tuition and fees in the semester.
- Assistants must be full-time matriculated graduate students at the Department of Economics who are able to devote their full attention to their graduate program.
- The University of Detroit Mercy is unable to provide tax advice; each student is responsible for determining how the tax law applies to their own situation. Please consult with a tax expert or contact the appropriate tax authority for the most up-to-date guidance on your taxes.
- Graduate students must register for a minimum of 9 credit hours during the granting semester or have “certified full-time status” in order to be considered full-time students by certain outside agencies/organizations (e.g., lending institutions, health insurance carriers, the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service, etc.).
